The Coast Office

The Coast Office
The small stone building down at the harbour was the boat shed for the coastguard house and dates to the 1800s, today it is occupied by the Coast Office which engages in numerous activities for young people and adults. Based around  Causeway Challenges these consist of watersports and maritime pursuits as a solution to health, wellbeing and understanding the maritime environment. The key elements are Building Understanding: exploring and preserving the unique heritage of the village (Portballintrae) by its community and visitors. Inspire Learning: getting people to enjoy the bay and the coastlines in new and unique ways. Development: specifically people and community, through the unique Causeway Challenges.

Causeway Challenges are based on the John Muir Trust’s 4 challenge model: 1. Discover our heritage and our wild places. 2. Explore it: building understanding as you go! 3. Conserve it: take some practical action and personal responsibility. 4. Share the experience: a presentation, online video or through storytelling. The challenges have included the development of a village boat (Drontheim), the Lady Elizabeth. Lots of interesting programs are always happening so drop by and check them out of your in the area. They currently run an activity which involves collecting shark egg cases and logging the data and throughout the year events take place some of these are with the Ulster Wildlife Trust.
