Limavady

Limavady
Limavady (Limavadde) derives its name from 'Leim an Mhadaidh' and means ‘Leap of the Dog’. The name ties the original location of the settlement to the O’Cahan’s castle in the Roe Valley Country Park, the Dog Leap relates to a faithful guard dog of the O'Cahan's which is said to have leapt over the river gorge to warn its master of approaching enemies. Limavady is associated with the famous melody 'Danny Boy'. it is here that Jane Ross heard it being played by a blind fiddle play and from there it became known throughout the world. Limavady is also the start and finish of the Roe Valley Scenic Drive which follows the Roe valley Dungiven and back down the other side.
