One of the oldest building in Ulster is the White House, this partial ruin has been restored and opened to the public as an interpretation centre. The house is referenced on a 1570 maps and one of only four buildings existing between Belfast and Carrickfergus. The other being Belfast Castle, Lugg Castle and Carrickfergus Castle. It is estimated to be 300 years older than the oldest known building in Belfast. A nearby quay served as a landing and shipping point, it was here that the troops of King William III landed in 1690, he came ashore at Carrickfergus then rode to meet General Schomberg at the White House.
Inside the building has an exhibition space which not only tells its illustrious history but also that of the Williamite war in Ireland and its European dimension. To visit the centre, at the first roundabout on the route take the first left, then drive about 200 metres until you see Whitehouse Park, The White House is approximately 300 metres on the right and well worth a visit. It has seasonal opening times: June 1st - September 30th, Saturdays and Sundays only, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm. There is no charge to visit.
